Refresh Cannon

EDIT: Due to an excess of traffic, I have had to take Refresh Cannon off of this page. Please try again later. I am so sorry folks. Feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed. I will post it again when things cool down.

And… were back.

Inspired by the popularity of Refresh Hero, I am continuing in my exploration of the limits of avatar images. Of course the main challenge is developing ways for the user to have meaningful interaction with only their refresh button. The previous game used the element of time in binary fashion: either you got it right, or not. This new game uses time to allow you to adjust two different variables.

Avatar Cannon is the basic trajectory game of angle and velocity. The amount of time you wait before refreshing allows you to adjust these variable and attempt to hit the target. Each time you hit the target a new terrain is generated. The avatar also displays your standing against all other users. A full live high score list is also available.

Finally, if you would prefer to have your score listed next to your nick name, instead of your IP address, you can register here.

Keeping the Party “Up-Tempo”

My friend Joachim Luis came over tonight and started reading though the beginning piano book that was resting on my keyboard. Being the jock party animals that we are, we decided to try to sing a few of them as two part vocal pieces.

First we sight-read “Rondino” by Jean Philippe Rameau on movable “doo” with Joachim on bass and me on treble (this one is for my dad):

Last Friday I performed the Papageno Papagena Duet in San Francisco State’s Opera Gala. Papagena is sung by my friend Sanja Wetzel and the whole ordeal was staged by Alissa Deeter. Video:

Barbershop multi-track: Mother’s Day gift

Due to a rehearsal, I am not going to be able to see my Mama on Mother’s Day, so I am celebrating it with her a day early. My acquaintance/idol/current-ipod-favorite H.P. Mendoza, and a girl at 16th and Mission Poetry who read a poem about her mom, reminded me that being an artist is pointless if you can’t use your art form to express yourself. So for Mother’s Day I made my mom an audio/barbershop Hallmark greeting card multi-tracked in a noisy practice room at school.

Alvin sings Schumann’s Widmung

When I was taking Vocal Literature from Dr. Alissa Deeter, she mentioned that for some reason when she thought of the song “Widmung” by Robert Schumann, she always thought of it being sung by the Chipmunks. It took me some time, but about a year ago, I got around to making her crazy thoughts a reality, and recorded just that: a Chipmunk’s Widmung. I then emailed her telling her I “found it.” I have been told she did not realize I had made it until she played it for her class, who gave up the secret.

Here, it is for your enjoyment:

SFSU Chamber Singers sing for ACDA

My (now ex) choir just toured to Anaheim, Souther California, to sing for a choral conductors’ convention, ACDA. It is a huge honor for our choir to be invited to sing here. Here is a clip from a pre-convention concert we gave in St. Boniface.

From Paul Kim’s description of the video:

San Francisco State University Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Joshua Habermann sings Rosas Pandan, a traditional Filipino folksong arranged by George Hernandez, performed at St Boniface Church in Anaheim on Feb 26, 2008. Sung in Visayan about the beautiful maiden Rosas Pandan.

More video’s can be found on Paul Kim’s YouTube account.

Youtube also caught my choir

My idol, Paul Kim, put a few videos of my (our) choir on Youtube. He is the one singing the bass solo part in this one.

From Paul’s Youtube description:

San Francisco State University’s choir concert, December 15, 2007 at Most Holy Redeember Church in the Castro. “1st Katisma” – from “Vigilia” by Einojuhani Rautavaara, sung in Finnish. Conducted by Dr. Joshua Habermann.

Thanks Paul!

Youtube finally caught me

On December 7th, at San Francisco State’s Opera Workshop performence, I stood in for a baritone who had broken his leg. The girl who sang Papagena, or perhaps her parents, posted this on Youtube.
